One cubic yard measures 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk material is sold by that cube or by the ton, so ordering starts with turning your project area into the right unit. These tools make that conversion for 24 materials, using each product's actual weight per cubic yard. Shredded mulch runs about 600 lb per yard, while crusher run comes in at 3,000 lb per yard. The volume is identical, but the weight is five times greater. That is why a calculator matched to the material matters for tonnage.

The calculation method

First find the area by multiplying the length and width in feet. Change the depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12, then multiply it by the area to get cubic feet. Divide that figure by 27 to get cubic yards, then multiply the yards by the material density for tons. That is the full calculation used for measurements provided by phone.

Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)

Area is easy to measure, but depth changes the order fast. A 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches takes half the stone required for that patio at 4 inches. If the depth is uncertain, review the project guidance on the material page first.

Match material to the work

  • For a driveway or parking pad, put crusher run or road base down first, then use driveway gravel or #57 stone as the surface. Figure the two layers with separate calculators.
  • For a soggy trench, standing water, or a French drain, use clean #57 or drain rock at a depth of 12 inches or more.
  • In planting beds, put shredded mulch around plants. Use river rock where a border should stay in place without needing a refresh.
  • For a bare or sparse lawn, spread 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before installing seed or sod.
  • Use fill dirt to bring up a low spot or fill a hole, then reserve topsoil for only the upper 4 to 6 inches.
  • Build a paver patio with compacted base and exactly 1 inch of bedding sand. The Paver Base and Paver Sand calculators calculate the layers separately.
  • For playground fall areas, maintain pea gravel at 9 to 12 inches deep.
  • Where a bank or shoreline is eroding, place riprap over fabric in layers of 12 inches or more.

Common ordering questions

Which calculator is right for my project?
Pick the calculator for the material you plan to buy, since it uses that material's actual weight. If you are comparing pea gravel with river rock for the same path, enter the same dimensions in each calculator. Volume is unchanged, but tonnage and price are not.
Should I buy cubic yards or tons?
Buy using the unit shown on the product page. Gravel and stone sell by the ton, while mulch and soils sell by the yard. Each calculator displays both amounts, so you do not have to convert them yourself.
How close are calculator estimates?
The formula is exact, while jobsite conditions are not. Wet material, compaction, and an uneven subgrade can shift the required amount by about 10 to 15%, so calculator results are presented as a range. Crushed material results include a small extra allowance. Check measurements twice to stay within the range.
Can one delivery include several materials?
Yes. Calculate base stone and surface gravel, fill dirt and topsoil, or mulch and edging rock with separate tools, then put every product in one order. Delivery remains free.
Are the calculator materials available to order?
Yes, all 24 materials are available. Each calculation links to the matching product page with your calculated quantity.
