Gravel calculator for Mississippi
Plan gravel or landscape rock by volume and weight, then choose the right material for free delivery.
Enter your project dimensions
Use 116 square feet at a 2 inch depth as the coverage estimate for one ton of crushed gravel. Enter the area dimensions and depth, then choose a material to view cubic yards, tons, and delivered price. Landscape rock can be calculated here as well. Crushed gravel, #57 stone, and similar aggregate weigh close to 2,800 lb per cubic yard.
Estimate your gravel quantity
- Take measurements in feet. For a rectangle, enter length and width. For a circle, use its diameter. Treat an L-shaped driveway as two rectangles, then let multiple-areas mode total them.
- Choose a depth in inches. Use 2 to 3 inches for paths and surface refreshes. For a new driveway, install 4 to 6 inches in two layers rather than one pour.
- To get cubic feet, multiply area by depth in feet. Divide that total by 27 for cubic yards and use 1.4 to estimate tons.
Tons = cubic yards × 1.4 (crushed gravel at ~2,800 lb per cubic yard)
Useful gravel weight and coverage figures
Dry crushed gravel runs about 2,800 lb for each cubic yard, or 1.4 tons. A ton therefore equals roughly 0.71 cubic yards. As the layer gets deeper, it covers less ground:
| Depth | 1 cubic yard covers | 1 ton covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inches | 162 sq ft | ≈ 116 sq ft |
| 3 inches | 108 sq ft | ≈ 77 sq ft |
| 4 inches | 81 sq ft | ≈ 58 sq ft |
| 6 inches | 54 sq ft | ≈ 39 sq ft |
| Material | Weight per cubic yard | Tons per yard |
|---|---|---|
| Driveway / walkway gravel | ≈ 2,800 lb | 1.40 |
| Pea gravel (3/8") | ≈ 2,800 lb | 1.40 |
| Crushed stone (#57, 3/4") | ≈ 2,800 lb | 1.40 |
| Crusher run / road base | ≈ 3,000 lb | 1.50 |
| River rock (1-3") | ≈ 2,700 lb | 1.35 |
Recommended depths by use
- Garden paths and walkways: Install 2 to 3 inches of walkway gravel over compacted ground or fabric.
- Existing driveway refresh: add 2 inches of surface gravel.
- New driveways: Begin with 3 to 4 inches of compacted crusher run, followed by 2 to 3 inches of driveway gravel or #57. The lower course supports traffic, and the upper course drains water and provides the finished look.
- Patios and sitting spaces: use 2-3 inches within sturdy edging.
- French drains and wet areas: use 12 inches or more of clean stone. Calculate these projects with the Stone Calculator because drainage calls for washed rock without fines.
Example calculation: a 50 x 10 ft driveway
For five hundred square feet at 4 inches deep: 500 x 0.333 = 167 cubic feet. After dividing by 27, that equals 6.2 cubic yards, or 8.7 tons. Include 5% for compaction and order about 9 tons, with about 60/40 split between crusher run base and surface gravel. Keep the layers separate. A frequent phone-order issue is measuring carefully, then planning to place one 2-inch layer directly over dirt.
Common project estimates
These planning estimates use 1.4 tons per cubic yard:
| Project | Typical size | Depth | Volume | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-car driveway pad | 20 x 10 ft | 4" | 2.5 yd³ | 3.5 tons |
| Two-car driveway | 24 x 20 ft | 4" | 5.9 yd³ | 8.3 tons |
| Country driveway | 50 x 12 ft | 6" | 11.1 yd³ | 15.6 tons |
| Garden path | 20 x 3 ft | 3" | 0.6 yd³ | 0.8 tons |
| Patio seating area | 12 x 12 ft | 3" | 1.3 yd³ | 1.9 tons |
| Shed base | 10 x 12 ft | 4" | 1.5 yd³ | 2.1 tons |
Four errors that lead to another delivery
- Missing the base beneath a new driveway. Gravel placed directly over soil can rut within a season. Install the base layer before the finish layer.
- Looking only at area when comparing quotes. A 20 x 10 pad can require different quantities based on depth, so compare quotes at the same tonnage.
- Using less than 2 inches. By spring, one inch of gravel can sink into mud.
- Leaving out the crown. Level gravel collects water, but a 2% slope directs it away and helps hold the fines in place.
Choosing gravel for each surface
Use angular crushed gravel where vehicles travel because it keys together under weight. Rounded material, including pea gravel and river rock, shifts under loads and can spread, so it works better for walkways and landscape beds. For a driveway, use a compactable base such as crusher run or road base beneath a draining surface such as driveway gravel or #57. On Mississippi clay, a stable base and drainage matter. How gravel is measured and sold
A gravel pile can be measured three ways. A cubic yard measures volume. A ton measures weight, with 2,000 lb equaling about 0.71 yards of gravel. A truckload depends on truck capacity: a single-axle hauler carries 8 to 10 yards, while a tandem carries 12 to 16 yards (17 to 22 tons). Compare quotes in the same unit by converting them to tons before comparing prices. Focus on the delivered price, since hauling can make up a large share of aggregate cost.
How to measure unusual driveways
Curved lanes and turnarounds take a little different measuring. Measure a curved drive along its center, then use the average width. For a bulb turnaround, use the widest measurement as the circle diameter. Make the base course thicker at the low end of a slope, where water and gravel travel. If a layout is difficult to measure, separate it into rectangles and total it with multiple-areas mode.
Preparing for delivery
- Before the truck gets there, choose a firm unloading area clear of low wires and septic field crossings.
- Place the load near the project area. Moving one yard takes 9 to 14 wheelbarrow trips, so another 10 feet matters when you have 6 yards to move.
- Protect pavement before a delivery by putting down a tarp. It cuts cleanup from an afternoon to ten minutes.
- Pack the base layer before placing the finish layer. Use a rented plate compactor, or make do with truck tires.
