Loose crusher run tightens by 10-15% once compacted. Enter the depth you want after compaction, since ordering only to that measurement leaves the finished base half an inch short. This calculator has a +10% allowance turned on for that reason. You may see it called 610 Limestone, crushed limestone base in Mississippi, or 2 inch minus on tickets. Each name describes crushed stone containing fines, weighing about 3,000 lb per cubic yard and compacting into a surface that resists tire movement.

Order for compacted depth

  1. In feet, find the footprint: multiply lane length by width, or measure the pad.
  2. Enter the finished compacted depth required: 4 inches for pavers and paths, 4-6 beneath driveways, and 6-8 for truck traffic.
  3. Divide cubic feet by 27 for yards, then multiply by 1.5 for tons. Leave the +10% enabled. Depth specs refer to material after rolling.
Tons = (Area sq ft × Compacted depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × 1.5 × 1.10

Best uses and limits

  • Driveway base calls for 4-6 inches after compaction, topped with 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel for driving.
  • For an economical rural lane, crusher run can be used alone for a firm driving surface. It will dust in summer and need reshaping every 2-4 years.
  • Paver and slab work calls for 4 inches installed in 2-inch compacted lifts. Use the Paver Base Calculator to figure the entire paver build.
  • For shed and hot-tub pads, use 4 inches on stripped ground and 6 on soft soil.
  • Do not use it in a French drain. Its fines help it bind, but they also retain water. Clean #57 or drain rock is for drainage.

Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad

For Two hundred square feet compacted to 4 inches: 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet, which equals 2.5 cubic yards or 3.7 tons. Plan on 4 tons to allow for extra material. Lay down half and compact it, then add the remainder and compact again. Two 2-inch lifts last years longer than one 4-inch layer, and renting a plate compactor for an afternoon can cost less than a first pothole repair.

Delivery guidance

  • Have the base and surface stone delivered together to keep the job moving. Delivery is free either way.
  • Have the load tipped at the end of the run, then work back toward the pile. On larger pads, working downhill is easier than pushing material uphill.
  • Before compacting, lightly mist each lift. Crusher run binds more firmly when it is damp.
  • Save a wheelbarrow-load for later touch-ups. Crusher run is used for pothole patches, and having some on hand helps when one appears.

How pricing works

Crusher run includes material from the crusher that has not been washed and sorted. On a 4-ton order, the +10% allowance can help avoid another half-ton delivery. Review the Crusher Run product page for per-ton pricing, look at Road Base too, and order both driveway layers together with free delivery.

Questions about crusher run, 610 Limestone, and crushed limestone base

How much crusher run is needed for a driveway?
Figure the lane area at a compacted 4-6 inches, convert using 1.5 tons per yard, then allow 10%. On a 50 x 10 ft lane at 4 inches, plan on about 10 tons delivered.
What does a yard of crusher run weigh?
A cubic yard weighs about 3,000 lb, or 1.5 tons, with a little extra weight after rain. Fines fill gaps around the stone, so it weighs more than clean gravel.
What separates crusher run from gravel?
Crusher run retains stone dust, while products such as #57 are screened clean. The dust creates a tightly compacted base. Clean stone stays open for drainage and surface layers. A driveway uses the base first, then the clean stone.
Are crush and run and crusher run alike?
They are regional names for the same material. 610 Limestone, crushed limestone base, and 2 inch minus are in the same group. Any of those names gets the same blend delivered.
Can crusher run serve as the top surface?
Yes, for rural or light-traffic drives. It forms a firm surface that handles weather, but dry periods can be dusty and it needs regrading every few years. A later 2 inches of #57 addresses both.
How much does crusher run compress?
Ten to fifteen percent is typical. A 4-inch loose layer compacts to about 3.5 inches. That is why the calculator starts with its allowance on and depths are listed after compaction.
