Yazoo clay and Delta buckshot can keep moisture around a working area long after rain has passed. Railroad Ballast gives a Mississippi build an angular stone course that holds together under load without closing off drainage paths. It is a practical fit where a pad must be built up and the finished grade needs to shed water away from the work area.
Reserve Railroad Ballast for the supporting layer under rail track, a machine area, or a hunting camp road. Its open structure is useful below the surface, but it is not the material to use where the finished area needs to pack into a fine, smooth travel layer. Choose a finer compactable base material for that upper portion when needed. Keeping the ballast lower in the build helps water move through the stone instead of sitting in wet clay below the load.
