Everything You Need to Know About #8 Crushed Stone
Size and Grading

- Crushed stone
After #8 Crushed Stone is spread in its assigned area, its crushed pieces and limited fines leave a free-draining stone layer instead of a soil-like surface. That behavior suits drain details, concrete mixes, and paver construction. On Yazoo clay or Delta ground that holds winter water, it should be part of a layout that directs runoff away from pads and other finished work. The clean grading avoids adding much fine material to the detail.
For paver projects, put #8 Crushed Stone in the specified support course or in joint spaces, keeping it separate from the clay around it. A raised pad and finished grade still need to address wet ground; this stone serves the drainage or hardscape function assigned to it. It is not intended to make clay behave like freely draining soil, so the runoff plan remains important.
